Diet and lifestye issues are at the heart of the aetiology of obesity, and form the cornerstone of any treatment programme. However, a complex interplay of various social, behavioural, emotional and psychological factors greatly influence the dietetic and physical activity status of an individual. Therefore, if lifestyle interventions are to be successful, there needs to be some provision to address these issues. Many effective weight-management programmes in fact take this approach, either actively or by indirect facilitation.
